A Grand Old Symbol

It was pioneering editorial cartoonist Thomas Nast who first associated the Republican Party with the Elephant symbol, on this day in 1874.

Nast of course was so well known for his inflammatory and often mean (though often equally piercing) comics, that his name became an ironic false etymology.

I prefer that symbol to this:

The other notable "achievment" of this day.

90 years ago this day, the Bolsheviks under the command of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenins real name) and VladimirAntonov easily defeated the forces of Alexander Kerensky, who barely bothered resisting their capture of the winter palace.

14 years later, to the day, Mao Tse Tung began his red revolution in China.

...coincidentally, it is also Leon Trotskys birthday.
